Before establishing himself as an artist Maxie Tjampitjinpa worked as a police tracker. He was the second Aboriginal artist to win a major western art award (the Northern Territory Art Award) in 1984 (Kaapa won the Caltex/NT Art Award in 1971). Maxie Tjampitjinpa died in 1997.
