The Anooralya Yam Plant is Emily’s main Dreaming. It aboinds in this area along with other bush tucker species that attract Emus.The Yam flower contains yellow seeds called kame that can be processed into a seed cake.The Emu and its preferred foods are central to the stories that emanate from this country.
The random undergrowth pattern of the yam plant underscores this work and is covered as Emily builds up layers of the colours symbolizing the different food species.The ochre red symbolises the bush tomato, the white the yam flower, the yellow the kame seed and wattle and the purple and blues the shades of the ripening plums.
The lineal pacey double-dipped brushwork combined with the mix of colours demonstrates the extraordinary abudance witnessed after good summer rains. Emily always believed that her ritual role aided this, and that she ‘grew up’ the food and human sources of her country. Ceremony called Awelye has always ensured the good seasons return
